Art Galleries and Museums
Sydney has a great selection of artsy museums for a place founded by prisoners and heathens. Some of them are even free. Note that each of the museums below has been given a "sitability rating" in its review, so that weary travelers can find a place to rest their feet.
Art Gallery of New South Wales FREE
More along the lines of a traditional European museum, the Gallery offers up old masters alongside Aboriginal art and some items from people who aren't even dead yet.
Museum of Contemporary Art FREE
A large, beautiful building in the Rocks with a great view of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. The art's pretty good too.
Australian Museum
This natural history museum shows you the native peoples and cultures who were torn apart by European settlers and how they are working to hold on to their heritage. There are also bones, stuffed animals, and a cafe.
Powerhouse Museum
There are robots and instruments and motorcycles and computers and movies and locomotives and engines that makes lots of noise and a whole room about the history of beer and can we go Mom? Can we, can we, can we?
Customs House FREE
Not a huge attraction in itself, but it’s probably on the way to somewhere else you want to go. It's also free, so there's no reason not to stop in and take a peek.
Australian National Maritime Museum
Sydney is surrounded by water, so it makes sense that there would be an amazing building to commemorate it's maritime history and seafaring traditions.
