Break Away This Spring

It's that time of year where you have to start planning for the future. This is an important decision, so be sure to do your research, ask questions, and give it lots of thought. So, what are you going to do for spring break?

Not sure yet? Well here's a suggestion: Don't follow the herd. Sure, there's something to be said for crazy all-night parties that will leave you dazed and confused, or days spent tanning until your shoulders flake and peel, but what if you did something different?

What if you came back to school with even better stories to tell than all the Barbie and Ken clones in your dorm? Try one of these trips on for size:

Livin' La Pura Vida: Costa Rica
It's the ultimate alternative destination for spring breakers. You can spend hours at the beach in Montezuma, but you can also explore the rainforests; try kayaking, surfing, and snorkeling; and still enjoy the nightlife. Plus, Costa Rica is way cheaper than tourist-infested Cancun or Florida. (There's no cover at any of the bars or clubs!)

Break von Trapp Style: Ski the Alps
If you're coming from the North, you may have had your fill of snow shovels, sleds, and skis by the time spring break rolls around. But if you've spent the winter in shorts and flip-flops (Miami, L.A., this means you) then this is your chance to trade the surfboard and roller blades in for a snowboard and snowshoes. And where's the best place in the world for winter sports? The Swiss Alps. Head to Grindelwald, Switzerland, to enjoy great slopes, make snow angels all over the place, and stay in the coolest ski lodge-style hostel you've ever seen.

The Backpacker's Delight: London, Paris, Rome
Rates to Europe are cheaper now than they will be in the summer, and the sights are just as good. Make some international friends, work on your accent, and enjoy all the Continent has to offer. Put together your own mix of railpass, bus pass, hostel stays, and car rentals, to create an experience you'll never forget.

Break for Cheap: Stay Home
No, that doesn't mean you should sit in front of the TV for a week, or spend hours downloading illegal music files. But if you really can't afford to get away, why not spend your time helping others? Find out if your campus offers an alternative spring break volunteer trip. If not, get some friends together and offer to help at a local shelter, food pantry, or team up with Habitat For Humanity. It will be a great experience that will get your mind off of classes and have an amazing impact on your community.

Add Spring Break To Your Holiday Wish List
Don't wait until February to book something or to start thinking about how to pay for your trip. Research all of your options now and book soon to avoid paying inflated last-minute prices. To offset the cost, ask your relatives to give you spring break dollars for the holidays, or come up with some creative fundraising (bake sales may be passé, but kissing booths are always a good time). If you aren't sure where you're going or how much you'll need just yet, you can always ask for a gift certificate that can go towards air, hotel, or even a new backpack or other travel supplies.
