1 point for getting either part of this answer: Technically, William Dampier was the first Brit to get off his ship and have a look around Australia, around 1690. He was a pirate though, just looking for a way to make some cash, and wasn’t interested enough to stay. The first guy who was commissioned by the government, to chart the territory as part of a scientific expedition, was James Cook in 1768. He named the continent New South Wales and claimed it for Britain with a puny little flag.

1 point: The rush began in 1851, and picked up as the California Gold Rush was ending, so immigrants and 49ers who went to CA in search of riches left and headed Down Under.

Both groups were forced to live in reservations/camps; both were killed in mass by diseases brought over by European settlers; neither group gained strong legal rights until the mid-1900s; Christian missionaries and the government worked to assimilate both groups into white society, causing damage to their traditions and culture.
